Director, Renewable Energy Investments

GAF is committed to long term leadership of the rooftop photovoltaic industry. The industry is at a point of inflection where it can evolve into a significant portion of the overall roofing market and GAF is going to be devoting significant resources to the solar industry as the market evolves. By providing technical knowledge on residential and commercial solar projects and by representing GAF with key customer segments, particularly sophisticated building owners and key funding partners, the Director of Renewable Energy investments will be a key member of the solar leadership team.


  • Oversight of direct renewable energy investments, including:

  • Understanding of financial and tax models and required returns

  • Assurance that jobs are properly installed, including all necessary reporting, prior to disbursement of GAF funds and as complex jobs are built

  • Updated reporting on project performance, and development of tools and programs for monitoring changes.

  • Understanding of evolving regulatory changes and impacts on GAF investments.

  • Monitoring progress by companies that GAF has made direct investments or funded significant projects with and assure progress is consistent with GAF investment needs.

  • Manage a solar business analyst and assure that analyst develops the understanding of GAF programs and services.

  • Manage Project Managers and provide ongoing diligence of financing partners, including regular review of financial position/fundraising, internal controls and investment strategies

    • Business management of Commercial and Industrial solar program:
  • Work with Regional Development Managers to introduce the GAF Solar offering to local building owners, roofing contractors and others.

  • Develop go to market strategies for evolving C&I solar rooftop program, including creation of business and marketing tools, web-sites, etc.

  • Work with Regional Development Managers to introduce the GAF Solar offering to local building owners, roofing contractors and others.

  • Utilize sophisticated software and modeling tools in analyzing various financial opportunities. Understand diverse group of financial partners.

  • Work to develop and support a diverse set of financial models for solar.

  • Manage a diverse group of relationships with project development teams.

  • Manage analysis of specific C&I rooftop solar jobs and assure that jobs are consistent with GAF sales goals and tax and financial requirements.

    • Business management of residential solar program
  • Work with west coast based solar support programs to assure that Solar Elite and related contractors have the tools and motivation that enable them to successfully partner with GAF and that contacts and communications between GAF and their partners are properly managed.

  • Research and recommend software and go to market tools in residential solar space, including development of tools to help present benefits of solar directly to homeowners.

  • Work with west coast based third party solar service providers and develop and oversee joint marketing and sales initiatives that help GAF understand all areas of the evolving residential solar space.

  • Sustain and extend relationships with solar market service providers, assuring that GAF and their partners have access to the latest tools and services in the evolving solar space.

  • Provide guidance and feedback to residential solar selling and support teams, both internal and external.

  • Oversee programs for training of solar elite contractors and inspections of solar jobs.

  • Product development initiatives

  • Support launch of early generation solar products and continue evolution of product in response to market initiatives, including site visits to test sites and ongoing product review.

  • Manage $5MM budget for development of next generation solar projects.

  • Develop and work closely with network of consultants and service providers in solar space, ranging from the base material/cell space to the advanced go to market space

  • Understand the engineering and design requirements for solar programs

  • Provide guidance to codes and testing resources in development of solar products

  • Develop and maintain relationships with solar product and service providers, particularly with next generation products. Support Corporate Development function with its review of potential solar partners including regular visits to companies GAF has made investments in.

  • Represent voice of customer and market in new product development for solar products.

  • Explore go to market programs with companies in new lightweight solar rooftop space and leverage relationships to assist in product development efforts.

  • Strengthen GAF presence in overall solar market

  • Expanding industry contacts and continue to establish GAF as a significant player in the solar industry (emphasizing the large west coast based participants)

  • Developing infrastructure and support needed from key functional areas, including logistics, purchasing, order entry, sales, marketing and certified contractor programs.

  • Provide training and education to GAF functions as needed.

  • Represent GAF to solar industry and industry partners, and assure that roofing industry solar goals are informed by GAF. Work with senior GAF management to develop options for solar on GAF facilities and manage bid process.

  • Other projects as required

Skills & Attributes

The Director of Renewable Energy Investments role will be a high visibility role within the organization and will interact with corporate leadership and the chairman’s office to fulfill their roles. The right background for the role includes:

  • 5 to 7 years experience in consulting, marketing or business management. Solar or energy industry experience preferred

  • Bachelors degree a must - Master’s degree in business, science or engineering preferred.

  • Broad business expertise, with exposure to the market facing areas of sales, marketing and logistics

  • Demonstrated analytical and financial ability which will be required for understanding and communicating solar system performance and economics.

  • Experience and orientation in working cross functionally and collaboratively

  • Need a strong and consistent communicator, upwards and downwards. Good listener.

  • Entry understanding of tax and policy impacts on solar industry.

  • High energy/high sense of urgency/fast-paced and can think on his/her feet.

  • Working with next generation solar panel manufacturers as we look at new products. Ability to discuss complex electronic and structural design issues and provide key insights to design, while managing high level negotiations.

  • Develop commercial roof go to market initiatives and work with potential panel partners.

  • Work with new and existing fund providers and give insight to senior internal stakeholders including finance and corporate tax, about fund and installer needs.

  • Create and present updated go to market plans to all functions in the business.

  • This role may be filled as a Sr. Manager
