DNV GL Business Line Director – Energy Advisory Services in Katy, Texas

DNV GL – Energy is seeking a driven and accomplished leader to take the reins of our Energy Advisory Consulting Practice as Business Line Director for North America. The Business Line Director will have responsibility for leading a team of 60 professionals toward achievement of strategic and operational targets including revenue and profitability, quality, innovation, and customer value, while driving alignment with DNV GL’s Purpose, Vision, and Values. Value propositions overseen by the Director will include, but are not limited to, services reflecting grid modernization, grid security, distributed generation, storage, electrification, digitalization, and the energy transition towards an affordable, reliable, and clean energy future. The Business Line Director reports directly to the Regional Manager and Senior Vice President for DNV GL – Energy, North America. This business line director position serves on a 10-person leadership team for DNV GL’s Energy Business Area in North America with more than 730 employees.

This position may be based in any of our major offices including Katy (Houston), Texas; Oakland, California; Medford, Massachusetts; Chalfont, Pennsylvania; Dallas, Texas; or Arlington, Virginia offices.

Tasks may include

  • Provide leadership for a team delivering a set of current and new advisory services that help utilities and other policy makers to address a changing energy industry

  • Develop and expand relationships with clients at senior levels and provide leadership by example in business development initiatives

  • Forecast, identify, and respond to relevant emerging market trends, opportunities, and policies

  • Lead in the development of innovative approaches to business development, intellectual property creation, and service delivery that can be clearly communicated to the marketplace

  • Serve as a member of DNV GL – Energy’s North America leadership team that seeks to leverage capabilities across the organization, including other DNV GL business areas and digitalization platforms

  • Report to management on a regular basis with respect to the status of all business development and operational activities

  • Demonstrate success by achieving and exceeding targets on an individual and department level, including Revenue, Profit, new customer acquisition, customer satisfaction, renewed engagement, etc.

  • Provide mentorship and management to staff; guide resource planning and talent identification activities; develop team members within their career development plans and with an eye toward succession planning

  • Provide leadership for the development of market competitive advisory and research services, technical and operational services, strategic business consulting services, and integrated offerings

What we're asking

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

  • 7+ years of experience leading teams providing technical and strategic consulting or advisory services to mid- to large-scale customers in the utility industry

  • 15+ years of experience providing consulting services, preferably in the energy industry

  • The candidate should have a keen understanding of the political and policy landscape that utilities, transmission and distribution owners, and market/system operators face

  • Demonstrable experience building, leading, and motivating teams to deliver year over year growth and achievement of revenue and profitability targets, and instilling accountability for project cost considerations

  • A track record of developing talent to provide increased value to customers and rewarding career paths to employees

  • It is essential that the candidate be well-networked throughout the energy community, with demonstrated relationships and/or past roles with utilities, and agencies such as FERC, US DOE, the California Energy Commission, state regulatory bodies, and ISO management, or electrical industry trade groups such as the ESA, Smart Grid Alliance, etc.

  • The candidate should have knowledge of or experience in developing or overseeing the development and use of analytical tools for market simulation and analysis, asset management, regulatory compliance, and energy management systems and automation

  • The ideal candidate for this position is a business generator, capable of developing or leveraging relationships in pursuit of our strategy and bringing sound business decisions to his/her department. This person takes great pride in being able to grow new contacts into trusted advisory relationships

  • As a business line leader, this individual can see beyond obvious short-term opportunities and can focus his/her team on exploiting seams of opportunity within the energy sector

  • Demonstrable, well-developed experience in interactions with senior executives in relationship-building and business development settings

  • Proven track record in effective collaboration with other business units, achieving business targets, and providing thought leadership on complex business and technical issues

  • Having a willingness to travel on a regular basis within North America and, on occasion, overseas

  • Ability to effectively communicate by providing clear and concise business written materials in various formats including presentation slides, business plans, and white papers
