Duke Utility & Engineering Services Energy Systems Engineer

The Energy Management team in Duke Facilities Management is looking for someone willing to tackle an exciting new challenge. The newly created position of Energy Systems Engineer will design, test, implement, and operate Duke’s new building data analytics platform to optimize occupant comfort, identify energy conservation opportunities, and more effectively communicate troubleshooting activities to maintenance staff.

This position will provide the selected candidate with the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment with a variety of both legacy and emerging technologies, surrounded by a team of high-performing team of energy professionals who are constantly looking to improve the facilities and utilities for which they operate. This position requires a working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems commonly found in commercial buildings and utility plants, experience working with commercial building automation, and a working knowledge of IT infrastructure supporting automation systems. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and methodical, one who openly and willingly communicates effectively with managers, peer professionals, and trade staff, and one who refuses to accept the status quo.


Manage the building control systems for University’s High Performance Buildings and critical systems.

Responsibilities include monitoring building controls systems, control system alarm management, performance monitoring, reliability implementation, programming, project design and execution, procedure development, training, problem solving, and system documentation. Their goal is to ensure all high performance buildings and critical systems are performing optimally and within specification.

Typical Duties

  • Monitor HVAC systems with building automation systems to troubleshoot operational problems and optimize building performance

  • Develop & lead daily evaluations and tuning of real time controls systems operations

  • Work with current team members to implement energy efficiency analytics automated fault detection and diagnostic program

  • Work with current team members in the operational transition from Siemens insight to Siemens Desigo BAS platform

  • Work closely with the Facility Operations group to assure the building systems are being maintained properly and systems working optimally

  • Analyze control system issues and direct HVAC shop on problem resolution

  • Stay abreast of the latest technology environment and develops strategies for system improvements and enhancements

  • Develop & Analyze daily reports to assure the systems are running optimally and make recommendations for improvement

  • Oversee and approve external consulting engineers on the layout and design of all control systems in new construction and renovations

  • Alarms management for the building automation system

  • Team with other engineering disciplines to ensure projects and systems are operating within the required guidelines

  • Develop and update University documentation to provide guidelines for future project planning, design, construction and maintenance and ensure the implementation of these standards

  • Assist in developing control system training programs for control operator and HVAC shop personnel

  • Implement control logic and control source code when necessary

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Minimum Qualifications:


Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a specific engineering field related to building design and operations (e.g. Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) and eligibility for North Carolina licensure as an Engineer.


Work requires a minimum of three years experience in design, planning, evaluation and project management related to new construction and renovation of buildings and/or systems. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Good knowledge of building automation systems

  • Proficient with Siemens Apogee controls and programming

  • Experience in the controls and instrumentation for buildings and laboratories

  • Ability to analyze existing controls systems with applicable monitoring equipment to troubleshoot and resolve problems

  • Ability to create and maintain positive customer and stakeholder relationships.

  • Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
