AES Distributed Energy (DE), a division of AES’s United States business, is currently seeking a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Analyst Intern for over 84 MW of deployed Battery Energy Storage System capacity. Reporting to the DE Director of Asset Operations, the Intern’s primary role will be to assist the Operations team for the AES U.S. Battery Energy Storage System businesses by providing analysis, technical and process support. The BESS Analyst Intern will support technical projects focused at increasing the performance and reliability of AES U.S. battery assets and reducing operations and maintenance cost.


Successful candidate should be a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or related field. An academic standing of Senior in Fall/Spring 2017 is preferred. Candidate possessing a strong academic background, exceptional attention to details, and proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Power Point, Word, Project and Visio also is preferred. Professional experience in BESS operations is a plus. Familiarity with data acquisition systems and Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems also a plus.

Under supervision and with internal collaboration, Intern will perform the following:

  • Support BESS Operations team by collecting and conducting statistical analysis of battery performance data to identify issues and make recommendations to Operations and Maintenance team prioritizing work activities

  • Research, analyze and coordinate reliability and performance improvement technologies for the AES U.S. battery fleet

  • Support technical projects to enhance asset performance and operations in the following areas:

  • Asset Life Cycle Plan (ALCP)

  • Implementation of Asset Management Standards (AMS)

  • Degradation Analysis – Failure Analysis

  • Diagnostics

  • Assist in developing strategy to move from current design to newer design for older BESS assets

  • Support Operations team by analyzing SCADA data

  • Help draft battery Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

  • Analyze asset warranty limitations

Intern may be expected to complete additional assignments or projects as determined by his or her supervisor.


If academic credit for the work experience is desired, it is the intern’s responsibility to provide appropriate paperwork, interviews and evaluations to the supervisor in a timely manner for completion and verification.


Working conditions vary. Conditions include indoor work in clean, well-lighted, air-conditioned, heated and ventilated surroundings, as well as generation sites. These sites may have high temperatures and humidity; may involve outdoor work observation; require the use of personal protective equipment or special clothing.
